Some of the students disagreed with fire being the number one priority. Any opinions? There were more details about the situation and a map included but it would be too lengthy to include here. I just don't think that you must have fire.
I may be cheating here, but I have used this activity a number of times in my career. As I recall, there were two reasons for the fire, one you were stranded in Canada or Norther MN in the middle of winter and second, the smoke could be seen by rescue planes. So, yes I believe fire would be important for getting rescued.
Unless you want to freeze your @$$ off and live on nothing but maple syrup, I suggest you provide for fire building.
In addition to all the other reasons given by others about why fire is the number one priority, add the necessity to purify water by boiling. Water in the wilderness is not necessarily potable.
Warmth, hot food/drink, sginalling rescuers, light to see at night, and scaring off wild animals. Yes, I'd say fire is priority #1. Also, being a re-enactor, I can attest to how nice it is to wake up on a cold, rainy morning and have some way of warming myself, making hot coffee, and cooking pancakes and bacon to go with that maple syrup.
I agree that fire is a priority in survival situations.
