Where can i find a simple clock kit?

I'm interested in horology and would like a "beginners first" clock making kit. Its really hard to find one in the UK that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...any thoughts?


if you mean actually puting the mechanism together i don't know but if you mean fitting the whole thing together & making the face 'home bargains' had some for less than £10 or you could get a really cheap clock from tesco (about £2) and take the mechanism off then be creative with making the face (you could also do this and try puting it back together if that was what you were after - it's cheap!!!) x

I had one with a plastic case and brass movement I just gave away...

Was one of the creative playthings kits from the late 1960's

Edmund Scientific has one with brightly colored plastic gears, but i think that isn't really what you are after...

You can also order the plans for a wooden gear clock and fabricate it completely yourself.

Hobby Craft or an online retailer would be the best. also if you know a bit about it then buy a cheap clock and try taking it apart and putting it back together to get yourself acquainted to the functions of each part.

Altered art clock kits in the uk?

Where can I buy clock kits for a child (age 12)?

I'd like to find something that won't be too easy or too complicated. Something that might take from 1 hour to several hours of assembly time. She has an interest in putting together and taking apart mechanical objects.


Try an outfit called "Klockit" they have a website. (sorry, I don't know the website offhand) Many kits from putting a clock into a hole in wood or whatever to Grandfather clocks costing $1000's

None... the only time I was in my locker was between classes to switch out textbooks & binders. I didn't bother decorating it because the decorations will just get ripped up as you toss books in & pull new ones out.

There won't be compatibility issues, maybe the hone you just bought is locked to a different network than t-mobile. When you put the sim in, do you get an error like "insert correct sim" or something like that? If so, you will need to get your phone unlocked so that you can use t-mobile in it. Either phone t-mobile or take it along to a local phone shop and they will do it for a small fee.

i just got an email for that. i clocked it, then decided to do more reasearch and clicked out of the window when all of a sudden my other window that had yahoo turned in to a strange chat room!

now i am all ready a member of ebay for free or i have an account any way so i dont know why i would need a starter kit. wha do you think


Do not buy this kit, it is a scam for a place called Online Suplier. They will tell you they are going to give you a website and free merchandise you can sell along with the kit, but the kit never arrives and you find out the website was only free for 14 to 21 days. Then they charge you between $29.95 and $59.95 per month to use the site they had told you was free. The live chat is more of a hard sell room then a help line and the bottom line is you end up spending months trying to get them to stop charging you.

The starter kit is to help you with selling products. The chat room is live customer support. They want to help you. It is a marketing/sales strategy to gain new sellers.

People who ask about carbon-14 (14C) dating usually want to know about the radiometric1 dating methods that are claimed to give millions and billions of yearsâ€"carbon dating can only give thousands of years. People wonder how millions of years could be squeezed into the biblical account of history.

Clearly, such huge time periods cannot be fitted into the Bible without compromising what the Bible says about the goodness of God and the origin of sin, death and sufferingâ€"the reason Jesus came into the world.

Christians, by definition, take the statements of Jesus Christ seriously. He said, ‘But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female’ (Mark 10:6). This only makes sense with a time-line beginning with the creation week thousands of years ago. It makes no sense at all if man appeared at the end of billions of years.

We will deal with carbon dating first and then with the other dating methods.

How the carbon clock works

Carbon has unique properties that are essential for life on earth. Familiar to us as the black substance in charred wood, as diamonds, and the graphite in ‘lead’ pencils, carbon comes in several forms, or isotopes. One rare form has atoms that are 14 times as heavy as hydrogen atoms: carbon-14, or 14C, or radiocarbon.

Carbon-14 is made when cosmic rays knock neutrons out of atomic nuclei in the upper atmosphere. These displaced neutrons, now moving fast, hit ordinary nitrogen (14N) at lower altitudes, converting it into 14C. Unlike common carbon (12C), 14C is unstable and slowly decays, changing it back to nitrogen and releasing energy. This instability makes it radioactive.

Ordinary carbon (12C) is found in the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air, which is taken up by plants, which in turn are eaten by animals. So a bone, or a leaf or a tree, or even a piece of wooden furniture, contains carbon. When the 14C has been formed, like ordinary carbon (12C), it combines with oxygen to give carbon dioxide (14CO2), and so it also gets cycled through the cells of plants and animals.

We can take a sample of air, count how many 12C atoms there are for every 14C atom, and calculate the 14C/12C ratio. Because 14C is so well mixed up with 12C, we expect to find that this ratio is the same if we sample a leaf from a tree, or a part of your body.

In living things, although 14C atoms are constantly changing back to 14N, they are still exchanging carbon with their surroundings, so the mixture remains about the same as in the atmosphere. However, as soon as a plant or animal dies, the 14C atoms which decay are no longer replaced, so the amount of 14C in that once-living thing decreases as time goes on. In other words, the 14C/12C ratio gets smaller. So, we have a ‘clock’ which starts ticking the moment something dies.

Obviously, this works only for things which were once living. It cannot be used to date volcanic rocks, for example.

The rate of decay of 14C is such that half of an amount will convert back to 14N in 5,730 years (plus or minus 40 years). This is the ‘half-life.’ So, in two half-lives, or 11,460 years, only one-quarter will be left. Thus, if the amount of 14C relative to 12C in a sample is one-quarter of that in living organisms at present, then it has a theoretical age of 11,460 years. Anything over about 50,000 years old, should theoretically have no detectable 14C left. That is why radiocarbon dating cannot give millions of years. In fact, if a sample contains 14C, it is good evidence that it is not millions of years old.

However, things are not quite so simple. First, plants discriminate against carbon dioxide containing 14C. That is, they take up less than would be expected and so they test older than they really are. Furthermore, different types of plants discriminate differently. This also has to be corrected for.2

Second, the ratio of 14C/12C in the atmosphere has not been constantâ€"for example, it was higher before the industrial era when the massive burning of fossil fuels released a lot of carbon dioxide that was depleted in 14C. This would make things which died at that time appear older in terms of carbon dating. Then there was a rise in 14CO2 with the advent of atmospheric testing of atomic bombs in the 1950s.3 This would make things carbon-dated from that time appear younger than their true age.

Measurement of 14C in historically dated objects (e.g., seeds in the graves of historically dated tombs) enables the level of 14C in the atmosphere at that time to be estimated, and so partial calibration of the ‘clock’ is possible. Accordingly, carbon dating carefully applied to items from historical times can be useful. However, even with such historical calibration, archaeologists do not regard 14C dates as absolute because of frequent anomalies. They rely more on dating methods that link into historical records.

Outside the range of recorded history, calibration of the 14C clock is not possible.4

Other factors affecting carbon dating

The amount of cosmic rays penetrating the earth’s atmosphere affects the amount of 14C produced and therefore dating the system. The amount of cosmic rays reaching the earth varies with the sun’s activity, and with the earth's passage through magnetic clouds as the solar system travels around the Milky Way galaxy.

The strength of the earth’s magnetic field affects the amount of cosmic rays entering the atmosphere. A stronger magnetic field deflects more cosmic rays away from the earth. Overall, the energy of the earth’s magnetic field has been decreasing,5 so more 14C is being produced now than in the past. This will make old things look older than they really are.

Also, the Genesis flood would have greatly upset the carbon balance. The flood buried a huge amount of carbon, which became coal, oil, etc., lowering the total 12C in the biosphere (including the atmosphereâ€"plants regrowing after the flood absorb CO2, which is not replaced by the decay of the buried vegetation). Total 14C is also proportionately lowered at this time, but whereas no terrestrial process generates any more 12C, 14C is continually being produced, and at a rate which does not depend on carbon levels (it comes from nitrogen). Therefore, the 14C/12C ratio in plants/animals/the atmosphere before the flood had to be lower than what it is now.

Unless this effect (which is additional to the magnetic field issue just discussed) were corrected for, carbon dating of fossils formed in the flood would give ages much older than the true ages.

Creationist researchers have suggested that dates of 35,000 - 45,000 years should be re-calibrated to the biblical date of the flood.6 Such a re-calibration makes sense of anomalous data from carbon datingâ€"for example, very discordant ‘dates’ for different parts of a frozen musk ox carcass from Alaska and an inordinately slow rate of accumulation of ground sloth dung pellets in the older layers of a cave where the layers were carbon dated.7

Also, volcanoes emit much CO2 depleted in 14C. Since the flood was accompanied by much volcanism, fossils formed in the early post-flood period would give radiocarbon ages older than they really are.

In summary, the carbon-14 method, when corrected for the effects of the flood, can give useful results, but needs to be applied carefully. It does not give dates of millions of years and when corrected properly fits well with the biblical flood.

Other radiometric dating methods

There are various other radiometric dating methods used today to give ages of millions or billions of years for rocks. These techniques, unlike carbon dating, mostly use the relative concentrations of parent and daughter products in radioactive decay chains. For example, potassium-40 decays to argon-40; uranium-238 decays to lead-206 via other elements like radium; uranium-235 decays to lead-207; rubidium-87 decays to strontium-87; etc. These techniques are applied to igneous rocks, and are normally seen as giving the time since solidification.

The isotope concentrations can be measured very accurately, but isotope concentrations are not dates. To derive ages from such measurements, unprovable assumptions have to be made such as:

The starting conditions are known (for example, that there was no daughter isotope present at the start, or that we know how much was there).

Decay rates have always been constant.

Systems were closed or isolated so that no parent or daughter isotopes were lost or added.

There are patterns in the isotope data

There is plenty of evidence that the radioisotope dating systems are not the infallible techniques many think, and that they are not measuring millions of years. However, there are still patterns to be explained. For example, deeper rocks often tend to give older ‘ages.’ Creationists agree that the deeper rocks are generally older, but not by millions of years. Geologist John Woodmorappe, in his devastating critique of radioactive dating,8 points out that there are other large-scale trends in the rocks that have nothing to do with radioactive decay.

‘Bad’ dates

When a ‘date’ differs from that expected, researchers readily invent excuses for rejecting the result. The common application of such posterior reasoning shows that radiometric dating has serious problems. Woodmorappe cites hundreds of examples of excuses used to explain ‘bad’ dates.9

For example, researchers applied posterior reasoning to the dating of Australopithecus ramidus fossils.10 Most samples of basalt closest to the fossil-bearing strata give dates of about 23 Ma (Mega annum, million years) by the argon-argon method. The authors decided that was ‘too old,’ according to their beliefs about the place of the fossils in the evolutionary grand scheme of things. So they looked at some basalt further removed from the fossils and selected 17 of 26 samples to get an acceptable maximum age of 4.4 Ma. The other nine samples again gave much older dates but the authors decided they must be contaminated and discarded them. That is how radiometric dating works. It is very much driven by the existing long-age world view that pervades academia today.

A similar story surrounds the dating of the primate skull known as KNM-ER 1470.11 This started with an initial 212 to 230 Ma, which, according to the fossils, was considered way off the mark (humans ‘weren’t around then’). Various other attempts were made to date the volcanic rocks in the area. Over the years an age of 2.9 Ma was settled upon because of the agreement between several different published studies (although the studies involved selection of ‘good’ from ‘bad’ results, just like Australopithecus ramidus, above).

However, preconceived notions about human evolution could not cope with a skull like 1470 being ‘that old.’ A study of pig fossils in Africa readily convinced most anthropologists that the 1470 skull was much younger. After this was widely accepted, further studies of the rocks brought the radiometric age down to about 1.9 Maâ€"again several studies ‘confirmed’ this date. Such is the dating game.

Are we suggesting that evolutionists are conspiring to massage the data to get what they want? No, not generally. It is simply that all observations must fit the prevailing paradigm. The paradigm, or belief system, of molecules-to-man evolution over eons of time, is so strongly entrenched it is not questionedâ€"it is a ‘fact.’ So every observation must fit this paradigm. Unconsciously, the researchers, who are supposedly ‘objective scientists’ in the eyes of the public, select the observations to fit the basic belief system.

We must remember that the past is not open to the normal processes of experimental science, that is, repeatable experiments in the present. A scientist cannot do experiments on events that happened in the past. Scientists do not measure the age of rocks, they measure isotope concentrations, and these can be measured extremely accurately. However, the ‘age’ is calculated using assumptions about the past that cannot be proven.

We should remember God’s admonition to Job, ‘Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?’ (Job 38:4).

Those involved with unrecorded history gather information in the present and construct stories about the past. The level of proof demanded for such stories seems to be much less than for studies in the empirical sciences, such as physics, chemistry, molecular biology, physiology, etc.

Williams, an expert in the environmental fate of radioactive elements, identified 17 flaws in the isotope dating reported in just three widely respected seminal papers that supposedly established the age of the earth at 4.6 billion years.12 John Woodmorappe has produced an incisive critique of these dating methods.13 He exposes hundreds of myths that have grown up around the techniques. He shows that the few ‘good’ dates left after the ‘bad’ dates are filtered out could easily be explained as fortunate coincidences.

What date would you like?

The forms issued by radioisotope laboratories for submission with samples to be dated commonly ask how old the sample is expected to be. Why? If the techniques were absolutely objective and reliable, such information would not be necessary. Presumably, the laboratories know that anomalous dates are common, so they need some check on whether they have obtained a ‘good’ date.

Testing radiometric dating methods

If the long-age dating techniques were really objective means of finding the ages of rocks, they should work in situations where we know the age. Furthermore, different techniques should consistently agree with one another.

Methods should work reliably on things of known age

There are many examples where the dating methods give ‘dates’ that are wrong for rocks of known age. One example is K-Ar ‘dating’ of five historical andesite lava flows from Mount Nguaruhoe in New Zealand. Although one lava flow occurred in 1949, three in 1954, and one in 1975, the ‘dates’ range from less than 0.27 to 3.5 Ma.14

Again, using hindsight, it is argued that ‘excess’ argon from the magma (molten rock) was retained in the rock when it solidified. The secular scientific literature lists many examples of excess argon causing dates of millions of years in rocks of known historical age.15 This excess appears to have come from the upper mantle, below the earth’s crust. This is consistent with a young worldâ€"the argon has had too little time to escape.16 If excess argon can cause exaggerated dates for rocks of known age, then why should we trust the method for rocks of unknown age?

Other techniques, such as the use of isochrons,17 make different assumptions about starting conditions, but there is a growing recognition that such ‘foolproof’ techniques can also give ‘bad’ dates. So data are again selected according to what the researcher already believes about the age of the rock.

Geologist Dr Steve Austin sampled basalt from the base of the Grand Canyon strata and from the lava that spilled over the edge of the canyon. By evolutionary reckoning, the latter should be a billion years younger than the basalt from the bottom. Standard laboratories analyzed the isotopes. The rubidium-strontium isochron technique suggested that the recent lava flow was 270 Ma older than the basalts beneath the Grand Canyonâ€"an impossibility.

Different dating techniques should consistently agree

If the dating methods are an objective and reliable means of determining ages, they should agree. If a chemist were measuring the sugar content of blood, all valid methods for the determination would give the same answer (within the limits of experimental error). However, with radiometric dating, the different techniques often give quite different results.

In the study of the Grand Canyon rocks by Austin, different techniques gave different results.18 Again, all sorts of reasons can be suggested for the ‘bad’ dates, but this is again posterior reasoning. Techniques that give results that can be dismissed just because they don’t agree with what we already believe cannot be considered objective.

In Australia, some wood found in Tertiary basalt was clearly buried in the lava flow that formed the basalt, as can be seen from the charring. The wood was ‘dated’ by radiocarbon (14C) analysis at about 45,000 years old, but the basalt was ‘dated’ by potassium-argon method at 45 million years old!19

Isotope ratios or uraninite crystals from the Koongarra uranium body in the Northern Territory of Australia gave lead-lead isochron ages of 841 Ma, plus or minus 140 Ma.20 This contrasts with an age of 1550-1650 Ma based on other isotope ratios,21 and ages of 275, 61, 0,0, and 0 Ma for thorium/lead (232Th/208Pb) ratios in five uraninite grains. The latter figures are significant because thorium-derived dates should be the more reliable, since thorium is less mobile than the uranium minerals that are the parents of the lead isotopes in lead-lead system.22 The ‘zero’ ages in this case are consistent with the Bible.

More evidence something is wrongâ€"14C in fossils supposedly millions of years old

Fossils older than 100,000 years should have too little 14C to measure, but dating labs consistently find 14C, well above background levels, in fossils supposedly many millions of years old.23,24 For example, no source of coal has been found that lacks 14C, yet this fossil fuel supposedly ranges up to hundreds of millions of years old. Fossils in rocks dated at 1â€"500 Ma by long-age radioisotope dating methods gave an average radiocarbon ‘age’ of about 50,000 years, much less than the limits of modern carbon dating24 (see pp. 65â€"69 in The Revised and Expanded Answers Book for why even these radiocarbon ages are inflated). Furthermore, there was no pattern of younger to older in the carbon dates that correlated with the evolutionary/uniformitarian ‘ages’.24

This evidence is consistent with the fossil-bearing rock layers being formed in the year-long global catastrophe of the biblical Flood, as flood geologists since Nicholas Steno (1631â€"1687) have recognized.

Even Precambrian (‘older than 545 Ma’) graphite, which is not of organic origin, contains 14C above background levels.25 This is consistent with Earth itself being only thousands of years old, as a straightforward reading of the Bible would suggest.

Many physical evidence contradict the ‘billions of years’

Of the methods that have been used to estimate the age of the earth, 90 percent point to an age far less than the billions of years asserted by evolutionists. A few of them follow.

Evidence for a rapid formation of geological strata, as in the biblical flood. Some of the evidence are: lack of erosion between rock layers supposedly separated in age by many millions of years; lack of disturbance of rock strata by biological activity (worms, roots, etc.); lack of soil layers; polystrate fossils (which traverse several rock layers verticallyâ€"these could not have stood vertically for eons of time while they slowly got buried); thick layers of ‘rock’ bent without fracturing, indicating that the rock was all soft when bent; and more. For more, see books by geologists Morris26 and Austin.27

Red blood cells and hemoglobin have been found in some (unfossilized!) dinosaur bone. But these could not last more than a few thousand yearsâ€"certainly not the 65 Ma since the last dinosaurs lived, according to evolutionists.28

The earth’s magnetic field has been decaying so fast that it looks like it is less than 10,000 years old. Rapid reversals during the Flood year and fluctuations shortly after would have caused the field energy to drop even faster.29, 30

Radioactive decay releases helium into the atmosphere, but not much is escaping. The total amount in the atmosphere is 1/2000th of that expected if the universe is really billions of years old. This helium originally escaped from rocks. This happens quite fast, yet so much helium is still in some rocks that it has not had time to escapeâ€"certainly not billions of years.30

A supernova is an explosion of a massive starâ€"the explosion is so bright that it briefly outshines the rest of the galaxy. The supernova remnants (SNRs) should keep expanding for hundreds of thousands of years, according to physical equations. Yet there are no very old, widely expanded (Stage 3) SNRs, and few moderately old (Stage 1) ones in our galaxy, the Milky Way, or in its satellite galaxies, the Magellanic Clouds. This is just what we would expect for ‘young’ galaxies that have not existed long enough for wide expansion.31

The moon is slowly receding from the earth at about 4 centimeters (1.5 inches) per year, and this rate would have been greater in the past. But even if the moon had started receding from being in contact with the earth, it would have taken only 1.37 billion years to reach its present distance from the earth. This gives a maximum age of the moon, not the actual age. This is far too young for evolutionists who claim the moon is 4.6 billion years old. It is also much younger than the radiometric ‘dates’ assigned to moon rocks.32

Salt is entering the sea much faster than it is escaping. The sea is not nearly salty enough for this to have been happening for billions of years. Even granting generous assumptions to evolutionists, the sea could not be more than 62 Ma years oldâ€"far younger than the billions of years believed by the evolutionists. Again, this indicates a maximum age, not the actual age.33

Dr Russell Humphreys gives other processes inconsistent with billions of years in the pamphlet Evidence for a Young World.34

Creationists cannot prove the age of the earth using a particular scientific method, any more than evolutionists can. They realize that all science is tentative because we do not have all the data, especially when dealing with the past. This is true of both creationist and evolutionist scientific argumentsâ€"evolutionists have had to abandon many ‘proofs’ for evolution just as creationists have also had to modify their arguments. The atheistic evolutionist W.B. Provine admitted: ‘Most of what I learned of the field [evolutionary biology] in graduate (1964-68) school is either wrong or significantly changed.’ 35

Creationists understand the limitations of dating methods better than evolutionists who claim that they can use processes observed in the present to ‘prove’ that the earth is billions of years old. In reality, all dating methods, including those that point to a young earth, rely on unprovable assumptions.

Creationists ultimately date the earth historically using the chronology of the Bible. This is because they believe that this is an accurate eyewitness account of world history, which bears the evidence within it that it is the Word of God, and therefore totally reliable and error-free.

Then what do the radiometric ‘dates’ mean?

What do the radiometric dates of millions of years mean, if they are not true ages? To answer this question, it is necessary to scrutinize further the experimental results from the various dating techniques, the interpretations made on the basis of the results and the assumptions underlying those interpretations.

The isochron dating technique was thought to be infallible because it supposedly covered the assumptions about starting conditions and closed systems.

Geologist Dr Andrew Snelling worked on dating the Koongarra uranium deposits in the Northern Territory of Australia, primarily using the uranium-thorium-lead (U-Th-Pb) method. He found that even highly weathered soil samples from the area, which are definitely not closed systems, gave apparently valid ‘isochron’ lines with ‘ages’ of up to 1,445 Ma.

Such ‘false isochrons’ are so common that a whole terminology has grown up to describe them, such as apparent isochron, mantle isochron, pseudoisochron, secondary isochron, inherited isochron, erupted isochron, mixing line and mixing isochron. Zheng wrote:

Some of the basic assumptions of the conventional Rb-Sr [rubidium-strontium] isochron method have to be modified and an observed isochron does not certainly define valid age information for a geological system, even if a goodness of fit of the experimental results is obtained in plotting 87Sr/86Sr. This problem cannot be overlooked, especially in evaluating the numerical time scale. Similar questions can also arise in applying Sm-Nd [samarium-neodymium] and U-Pb [uranium-lead] isochron methods.37

Clearly, there are factors other than age responsible for the straight lines obtained from graphing isotope ratios. Again, the only way to know if an isochron is ‘good’ is by comparing the result with what is already believed.

Another currently popular dating method is the uranium-lead concordia technique. This effectively combines the two uranium-lead decay series into one diagram. Results that lie on the concordia curve have the same age according to the two lead series and are called ‘concordant.’ However, the results from zircons (a type of gemstone), for example, generally lie off the concordia curveâ€"they are discordant. Numerous models, or stories, have been developed to explain such data.38 However, such exercises in story-telling can hardly be considered as objective science that proves an old earth. Again, the stories are evaluated according to their own success in agreeing with the existing long ages belief system.

Andrew Snelling has suggested that fractionation (sorting) of elements in the molten state in the earth’s mantle could be a significant factor in explaining the ratios of isotope concentrations which are interpreted as ages.

As long ago as 1966, Nobel Prize nominee Melvin Cook, professor of metallurgy at the University of Utah, pointed out evidence that lead isotope ratios, for example, may involve alteration by important factors other than radioactive decay.39 Cook noted that, in ores from the Katanga mine, for example, there was an abundance of lead-208, a stable isotope, but no Thorium-232 as a source for lead-208. Thorium has a long half-life (decays very slowly) and is not easily moved out of the rock, so if the lead-208 came from thorium decay, some thorium should still be there. The concentrations of lead-206, lead-207, and lead-208 suggest that the lead-208 came about by neutron capture conversion of lead-206 to lead-207 to lead-208. When the isotope concentrations are adjusted for such conversions, the ages calculated are reduced from some 600 Ma to recent. Other ore bodies seemed to show similar evidence. Cook recognized that the current understanding of nuclear physics did not seem to allow for such a conversion under normal conditions, but he presents evidence that such did happen, and even suggests how it could happen.

Anomalies in deep rock crystals

Physicist Dr Robert Gentry has pointed out that the amount of helium and lead in zircons from deep bores is not consistent with an evolutionary age of 1,500 Ma for the granite rocks in which they are found.40 The amount of lead may be consistent with current rates of decay over millions of years, but it would have diffused out of the crystals in that time.

Furthermore, the amount of helium in zircons from hot rock is also much more consistent with a young earth (helium derives from the decay of radioactive elements).

The lead and helium results suggest that rates of radioactive decay may have been much higher in the recent past. Humphreys has suggested that this may have occurred during creation week and the flood. This would make things look much older than they really are when current rates of decay are applied to dating. Whatever caused such elevated rates of decay may also have been responsible for the lead isotope conversions claimed by Cook (above).

Orphan radiohalos

Decaying radioactive particles in solid rock cause spherical zones of damage to the surrounding crystal structure. A speck of radioactive element such as Uranium-238, for example, will leave a sphere of discoloration of characteristically different radius for each element it produces in its decay chain to lead-206.41 Viewed in cross-section with a microscope, these spheres appear as rings called radiohalos. Dr Gentry has researched radiohalos for many years, and published his results in leading scientific journals.42

Some of the intermediate decay productsâ€"such as the polonium isotopesâ€"have very short half-lives (they decay quickly). For example, 218Po has a half-life of just 3 minutes. Curiously, rings formed by polonium decay are often found embedded in crystals without the parent uranium halos. Now the polonium has to get into the rock before the rock solidifies, but it cannot derive a from a uranium speck in the solid rock, otherwise there would be a uranium halo. Either the polonium was created (primordial, not derived from uranium), or there have been radical changes in decay rates in the past.

Gentry has addressed all attempts to criticize his work.43 There have been many attempts, because the orphan halos speak of conditions in the past, either at creation or after, perhaps even during the flood, which do not fit with the uniformitarian view of the past, which is the basis of the radiometric dating systems. Whatever process was responsible for the halos could be a key also to understanding radiometric dating.44

Conclusion

There are many lines of evidence that the radiometric dates are not the objective evidence for an old earth that many claim, and that the world is really only thousands of years old. We don't have all the answers, but we do have the sure testimony of the Word of God to the true history of the world.

Radiation from atomic testing, like cosmic rays, causes the conversion of 14N to 14C.

Tree ring dating (dendrochronology) has been used in an attempt to extend the calibration of carbon-14 dating earlier than historical records allow, but this depends on temporal placement of fragments of wood (from long dead trees) using carbon-14 dating, assuming straight-line extrapolation backwards. The isochron technique involves collecting a number of rock samples from different parts of the rock unit being dated. The concentration of a parent radioactive isotope, such as rubidium-87, is graphed against the concentration of a daughter isotope, such as strontium-87, for all the samples. A straight line is drawn through these points, representing the ratio of the parent:daughter, from which a date is calculated. If the line is of good fit and the ‘age’ is acceptable, it is a ‘good’ date. The method involves dividing both the parent and daughter concentrations by the concentration of a similar stable isotopeâ€"in this case, strontium-86.

This is absurd because Carbon-14 dating is not used to prove ANY of the claims your article says C-14 dating is used for. It is not used to date the Earth's origin, as it can only be used for the past 60,000 years. It is not used by evolutionists to prove evolution. It is not used for any of this. Your article actually says that C14 dating can be used to date things that are millions of years old- yet no scientific claims have ever been made dating anything with C-14 for more than 60,000 years. This is a bald-faced lie. It simply can't be done. Your article is complete bull and any true Christian would be ashamed of spreading such untruth.

Actually it is more precise than it is accurate. Counting atoms of C14 is a very precise operation. Accuracy varies with the quality of the original sample. Faulty assumptions? No, not really. The truly faulty assumptions are in relying on the Bible to be a literal factual book, when in fact it is allegorical. The fact is reliable dating methods only go back thousands of years and then everything is speculative beyond that. The Bible is silent on when the earth first began its formation but it does give the order of events. It is true that there are problems with all dating methods, but Archeaologists, Paleontologists, etc. all know this. Usually, as many dating methods as possible are applied. And, interestingly, errors generally make things seem younger, rather than older. There's something that alot of Christian scientists forget. Most of the scientists who discovered (and continue to discover) the ancient-ness of the Earth and evolution, etc. were Christians. Many of them were very upset by their findings, but they were also Scientists. Real Scientists. And real Scientists accept observable evidence above mythology.

You're not going to convince any enlightened person by waving a book at them. Not unless you have several non-derivative books by several different, unrelated authors that reach the same conclusion.

Sounds like a good system you're willing to build and should last you a long time. I'm still using the ASUS A7N8X deluxe board with WiFi and it's 4 years old. I'm looking to upgrade and my specs for the new system are similar to yours.

The only difference is I'm going to install 2 raptors in a raid 0 with 2 500 GB drives for storage. I expect the system to last for several years as my current setup has.

BTW, you'll love the Wifi. I use mine as an access point for hooking up to the internet with my laptop and PDA and have no current need to buy a wireless router and port sniffing by outsiders is reduced since the wireless is off when my computer is off.

Pretty impressive. If you are going to overclock you might want to consider a water cooling kit.

good specs. my suggestion if you want to overclock you may use amd processor. but intel works well with temperature problems ( it rarely overheats.)

if you can and needed you may increase your processor speed to higher capacity.

You're skimping on the video card and the memory. If you're wanting to invest in a system that will handle the gaming, then those are parts you can't neglect. You've budgeted for a very high end motherboard but without a better boost from the memory, you're going to be bottlenecking badly. Go with the 800MHz memory instead of 667. Also, just spend the extra 100 dollars and get an 8800. You're really taking a performance hit for that 100 dollars. Benchmarks don't lie.

Circuit Board testing for dummies...me?

I'm currently learning about electronics from a book i bought and the internet. So to try out what I've been reading i bought a kit to assemble. It's a digital clock with a 24 hour relay timer. So I've soldered the thing together and hooked up the power supply and...nothing. A green led on the board lit up but the display did not :( so now i want to figure out what went wrong. How do i test it? test to see that each part is making contact and working properly. I don't see any shorts on the board. I have a little circuit testing meter but don't really know how to use it. Hope you guys have some suggestions for me, Thank you.


It's hard to offer specific advice since each electronic circuit has it's own unique structure.

Here's how I would approach this:

Check the instructions that came with the kit to see if there is advice on where to measure voltages on the circuit board. These are often called "test points". Usually this involves placing the black lead of the multimeter on the "ground" portion of the circuit card (you may need an alligator clip to do this) and then touching the red lead of the tester on the test point. The instructions will hopefully tell you what voltage you should read at those points (use the voltage setting on your meter that is appropriate for what you are trying to measure).

If you find a that the test points do not read what they are supposed to, or you have no instructions at all then you need to carefully go through your project and look for common problems:

- bad solder joints. Sometimes it might look connected but it isn't; if any joints look "sloppy" try to carefully reheat them.

- solder "bridges" - these are globs of solder that connect two parts of a circuit together: this creates a short-circuit.

- wrong connections . easy to do.. make sure the wires and components are in thier right places

- wrong orientation - some components can go in several different ways but will only work in the right orientation. Some good examples include transistors, IC's, some capacitors (esp electrolytic types), diodes etc.

- heat damage. Sometimes the soldering process can heat up components too much and burn them out. This might be hard to see; often you need to see if a test point is good on one side but bad on another side of a component to verify. Replacement parts are required if this is the problem. IC's are especially prone to this.

- faulty parts. The parts themselves can sometimes be tested outside of the circuit ie: resistors, diodes, transistors. IC's are difficult to test.

Try contacting the kit supplier if you are stumped and see if they have suggestions.

Tough job for a newbie. The most common problem for jeep techs is their soldering. It takes practice to learn how to solder. You may have a solder splash or whisker some where or just some cold solder connections that didn't really break down the surface tension of a device where a connection was made. The first check should be a static (no power) check of the entire circuit to check continuity and for shorts. If none are found, then you can go on with dynamic powered tests for the presence of proper voltages at their Vcc points. Your test meter should have both an OHM and a Volt mode. The OHM mode is used to check connections and for shorts and the Volt mode to check for power to the proper points.

Dear Sir

I wish to apply for an operation to make me sterile. My reasons are

numerous and after 9 years of marriage and 12 children (not counting the

one on the way), I have come to the conclusion that contraception is

totally useless.

After getting married, I was advised by the priest to use the RHYTHM

METHOD. Despite trying the Tango and Samba, my wife fell pregnant and I

ruptured myself doing the cha-cha. Since priests don't generally have much

cause to know about birth control I spoke to my doctor who suggested using

the SAFE PERIOD. At the time we were still living with my in-laws and had

to wait 3 weeks for a safe period when the house was empty; needless to

say, this didn't work.

The doctor also mentioned the BILLINGS METHOD which was fairly successful

as my wife didn't get pregnant, but then I've never heard of anyone getting

pregnant by a thermometer. We had to give this up because she wasn't very

satisfied and frankly I was getting bored.

A mate at work told me that PULLING OUT ON TIME stopped his wife from

having children. Although I set the alarm clock carefully, it didn't help -

sometimes I got bored waiting for it to ring and pulled out early,

sometimes it rang too soon and I had to hurry to finish. At least my wife

could tell the doctor the exact time she conceived.

A lady of several years' experience informed us that if we made love WHILE

BREAST-FEEDING we would be alright. It's hardly Newcastle Brown Ale, but I

did end up with a clear skin, silky hair and felt healthy. But my wife was

pregnant again. Another mate said that if my wife JUMPED UP AND DOWN AFTER

INTERCOURSE, it would prevent pregnancy. This she did, but what with all

the earlier breast-feeding, she ended up with 2 black eyes and eventually

knocked herself out. As for doing it STANDING UP, my wife is 6 foot 3 and I

am 5 foot 3 and kept falling off the box I had to stand on to do it.

I finally resorted to non-natural birth control and asked the Chemist about

the SHEATH. The Chemist demonstrated how easy it was to use so I bought a

packet. My wife fell pregnant almost immediately, which didn't surprise me;

I fail to see how a Durex stretched over the thumb (as the Chemist showed

me) can prevent babies. The Chemist also sold me some SPERMICIDAL CREAM.

This is all very well, but have you ever tried to catch the buggers and rub

the cream in? We also tried the SPONGE which was advertised as a new

method. She washed with it every night, but it didn't seem to make any

difference. For all the good it did she might as well have stuffed it up

her fanny.

My wife was then fitted with the COIL and after several unsuccessful

attempts to fit it, we realised that we had got a left hand thread and my

wife is definitely a right hand screw. The DUTCH CAP came next and we were

very hopeful of this as it did not interfere with our sex life at all. But

alas, it did give my wife a headache. We were given the largest size

available, but it was still too tight across her forehead.

In view of our problems, our Doctor gave us the new-fangled VAGINAL RING

which was on trial at the time. He told my wife to keep it in place for a

month. This was hard to do as it was too big for her finger and she had to

keep her hands clenched to keep it on. Despite clenching her fists during

intercourse, she was soon in the family way again.

Finally I told her to go on the PILL so she took aspirin regularly. 1 now

know that claims of 99% safety for pills are just advertising blarney. At

least it cured the headaches she got from the Dutch Cap. Could you suggest

a more effective pill? Aspirin was the most convenient as it is readily

available etc, but we could try paracetamol or nurofen if you think it

would work better. Someone suggested holding the pill between her legs, but

this defeats the object of the exercise since it renders intercourse

impossible in all but the kinkiest of positions.

I thought about having a VASECTOMY, but I really don't see how wearing a

tie will make any difference; besides I already belong to the local Social

Club and can't afford membership subs for joining a vasectomy club. I also

understand that you join for life in order to get the tie and with the 12

kids this would put a great strain on our finances. At present we are

reduced to ORAL SEX, but I'm sure you'll agree that just talking about it

is no substitute for the real thing. You must appreciate my frustration and

our problem.

Ok so me & my husband decided a few months ago to start ttc, and basically took the approach of "trying but not trying"... except after the first month after nothing happening I realized I wanted to be "trying and trying"! I basically want to bd AT LEAST every other day, starting a couple days after my period ends up until a week before its supposed to start again. However theres a problem - the last 2 months my husbands libido seems to disappear after the first few bd's and then doesn't want to more that once every 4 days or so, it's really frustrating! He wants a baby too but he is only 25 (I'm 28) so even though he wants a kid, he is not in a big hurry. I on the other hand, have a biological clock that is tickin' like crazy! I would like at least 3 kids before I'm 35, and also most of my friends and family (a lot who are younger than me) have little babies and I kind of get baby fever when I'm around them...

Anyways, we just had our first actual argument about this tonight because today is the every "other" day and he didn't want to do anything... so of course I got upset with him, which made him want to even less.. I told him I didn't even want to try anymore this month then because then if I get my period I will be thinking about all those days we missed...I just don't really know how to handle this and was wondering if anyone else had gone through this with their significant other? Also I was thinking that maybe tracking my ovulation with one of those predictor kits would help me be less "demanding" all month, but I haven't heard much in terms of those actually helping anyone conceive...


Well it sounds like he's just a little nervous about it all. And it also sounds like you're making a pretty big deal out of it already, and the pressure is probably just a bit much for him. Well, most craft stores will sell watch faces, and then you can make your own band with beads or go to someone who does leather to create a leather band, or a jewler to create a metal band.

Unfortunatly I dont have any samples to show you, but I actually make watches with the beaded bands. You may have to search the internet for the watch faces you like, but it definatly can be done.

You can also just buy it in the watch form you can find, and then replace the band either with a beaded band or other type of band. In some cases the place selling the watch itself can actually change the band for you, but you will have to pay extra for the band they replace it with.

You can also by the parts from a clock place or a really good craft store and just flat out make the watch face yourself, although I cannot do that.

you can buy watch faces.... and macrame the belt, or sew the belt, or weave it, use a chain.... whatever you want.... most craft stores sell the stuff... but some overcharge greatly.... i bought a watch face and it ran me 40$ us.... but ive seen them as cheap as 20$ us.... good luck! just make sure you get a clasp or closure for the belt....one that goes with your style

My period is like clock work every 32to33 days, and I think I ovulate late( I have been using ovulation kits for 7 months (but of course this month I decided to stop using them) my last period was 5/27/08 and I was due to get my next period on 6/27/08 when it did not come I took a hpt on 6/28 and it was pos. I took a blood test on 6/30 and I received my blood test results today and my hcg was 86 and my progesterone was 12. a nurse called me and told me that the doc (doctor a)was concerned because my hcg levels are low. but when I called back and spoke to the my doctor(doc B) she told me something different. I have been seeing doctor B and she said that doc A didnt have all the info on me. doc B also said that she is not worried cuz I was only 3 days late at the time of my blood test. I am going to take a blood test again tomorrow (48 hours after my 1st blood test) should I be worried? or do these #s sound good? doc B told me I did not need to repeat the blood test but I want to.


Your HcG level is "normal" for this early in your pregnancy....But testing after 48 hours should show an increase and put some of your worries to rest...I know I would want another one....

The progesterone is good for just a couple of days post test, but I agree, the HCG is a little low yet, but is above non-pregnant levels. It's good that the doctor is following up with another test -then they can see if the levels are trending upward appropriately. Good luck sweetie!

hey you can google for levels of hcg in blood and they give you average ranges foe how many days pregnant you are but from what i remember looking yesterday yurs is within range for your gestation

When in doubt ask for Progesterone vaginal suppositories.

This can help to prevent miscarriage.

hey girliknow what you are going when i got pregnant with my sixth pregnancy with my hubby i was 4 weeks and 4 days for my menstrual went to er and they called the next day and said i was pregger but my hcg is 150 and was consider low and possibly might be in my tubes i went in two days later got blood tooken and it double up so the next couple of weeks the levels was going up like it was suppose to up until the sixthe week the baby stopped growing but heres the thing i got in my tenth week of pregnancy when i found this out and they only way how i found out was by the bleeding i was having wen to the er and saw the ultrasond where my baby passed at six weeks what i as having was a natural miscarriageso everything came out no dnc was needed so i'm sharing my exoerience with you to tell you to at least prepare yourself just in case it comes back the way you don't want it that's how i had to do for me and when it happen it hurt but i was able to get through it because i knew that there was a chance it may notgo the way i wanted it to and mind you when i got pregger i was on the pill so that had alot to do with it as well hormones conteracting with pregnancy hormones it doesn't mix so actually i might be again i hope i am and everything goes well i wasn't on anything so the pill can' be the reason this time if it happens again

YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar's military regime distributed international aid Saturday but plastered the boxes with the names of top generals in an apparent effort to turn the relief effort for last week's devastating cyclone into a propaganda exercise.

The United Nations sent in three more planes and several trucks loaded with aid, though the junta took over its first two shipments. The government agreed to let a U.S. cargo plane bring in supplies Monday, but foreign disaster experts still were being barred entry.

Despite international appeals to postpone a referendum on a controversial proposed constitution, voting began Saturday in all but the hardest hit parts of the country. With voters going to the polls, state-run television continuously ran images of top generals including junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, handing out boxes of aid at elaborate ceremonies.

"We have already seen regional commanders putting their names on the side of aid shipments from Asia, saying this was a gift from them and then distributing it in their region," said Mark Farmaner, director of Burma Campaign UK, which campaigns for human rights and democracy in the country.

"It is not going to areas where it is most in need," he said in London.

State media say 23,335 people died and 37,019 are missing from Cyclone Nargis, which submerged entire villages in the Irrawaddy delta. International aid organizations say the death toll could climb to more than 100,000 as conditions worsen.

The U.N. estimated that 1.5 million to 2 million people have been severely affected and has voiced concern about the disposal of bodies.

With phone lines down, roads blocked and electricity networks destroyed, it is nearly impossible to reach isolated areas in the delta, complicated by the lack of experienced international aid workers and equipment.

The junta has refused to grant access to foreign experts, saying it will only accept donations from foreign charities and governments, and then will deliver the aid on its own.

Despite such obstacles, the U.N. refugee agency sent its first aid convoy by land into Myanmar on Saturday and began airlifting a 110 tons of shelter supplies from its warehouse in Dubai, it said.

Two trucks carrying more than 20 tons of tents and plastic sheets for some 10,000 cyclone victims crossed into the country from northwestern Thailand, said the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

"This convoy marks a positive step in an aid effort so far marked by challenges and constraints," said Raymond Hall, UNHCRs Representative in Thailand. "We hope it opens up a possible corridor to allow more international aid to reach the cyclone victims."

A total of 23 international agencies were providing aid to people in the devastated areas, said Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

But a large number of organizations still were awaiting government clearance for more aid shipments, staff and transport.

"It's a race against the clock," Byrs said. "If the humanitarian aid does not get into the country on a larger scale, there's the risk of a second catastrophe," she said, adding that people could die from hunger and diseases.

Health experts have warned there was a great risk of diarrhea and cholera spreading because of the lack of clean drinking water and sanitation.

Farmaner suggested that aid be delivered to the country, also known as Burma, even if the regime does not give its permission.

"We have had a week to convince the regime to behave reasonably, and they are still blocking aid," he said. "So the international community needs to wake up and take bolder steps."

However, aid providers are unlikely to pursue unilateral deliveries like airdrops because of the diplomatic firestorm that it could set off.

So far, relief workers have reached 220,000 cyclone victims, only a small fraction of the number of people affected, the Red Cross said Friday. Three Red Cross aid flights loaded with shelter kits and other emergency supplies landed Friday without incident.

The international Red Cross sent 31 tons of relief goods from Geneva Friday evening, including pumps, generators, water tanks and other water treatment equipment, as well as basic health care for about 10,000 people and surgery material, according to spokesman Marcal Izard.

The shipment was designated for those in labor camps and prisons, he said. He said the agency planned to distribute the aid in coordination with the Myanmar Red Cross, which is the leading relief agency in Myanmar.

The government seized two planeloads of high-energy biscuits â€" enough to feed 95,000 people â€" sent by the U.N. World Food Program. Despite the seizure, the WFP was sending three more planes Saturday from Dubai, Cambodia and Italy, even though those could be confiscated, too.

"We are working around the clock with the authorities to ensure the kind of access that we need to ensure it goes to people that need it most," WFP spokesman Marcus Prior said in Bangkok, Thailand.

Richard Horsey, a spokesman for U.N. humanitarian operations, said an international presence is needed in Myanmar to look at the logistics of getting boats, helicopters and trucks into the delta area.

"That's a critical bottleneck that must be overcome at this point," he said in Bangkok.

Heavy rain forecast in the next week was certain to exacerbate the misery. Diplomats and aid groups warned the number of dead could eventually exceed 100,000 because of illnesses and said thousands of children may have been orphaned.

Survivors from one of the worst-affected areas, near the town of Bogalay, were among those fighting hunger, illness and wrenching loneliness.

"All my 28 family members have died," said Thein Myint, a 68-year-old fisherman who wept while describing how the cyclone swept away the rest of his family. "I am the only survivor."

Officials have said only one out of 10 people who are homeless, injured or threatened by disease and hunger have received some kind of aid since the cyclone hit May 3.

The government's abilities are limited. It has only a few dozen helicopters, most of which are small and old. It also has about 15 transport planes, primarily small jets unable to carry hundreds of tons of supplies.

"Not only don't they have the capacity to deliver assistance, they don't have experience," said Farmaner, the British aid worker. "It's already too late for many people. Every day of delays is costing thousands of lives."


That's sad, but not unexpected.
